Ingredients

  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 lemon zest optional
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon whole milk
  • 2 sheets puff pastry
  • diced strawberries or fruit of choice
  • granulated white sugar for sprinkling
  • powdered sugar for dusting

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking sheet
  • Heart cookie cutter
  • whisk

Method

  1. To make the cheese filling, combine softened cream cheese, white sugar, vanilla extract, egg yolk, and optional lemon zest in a bowl. Set aside in the fridge.
  2. To make the egg wash, whisk together the egg and whole milk in a bowl and set aside.
  3. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  4. Roll out the two sheets of puff pastry and use a heart-shaped cutter to cut out as many large hearts as possible. Make an indentation with a smaller heart cutter slightly inside the large heart without cutting through.
  5. Brush the edges of each heart with the egg wash.
  6. Add the cheese filling to the center of the hearts and spread it just to the edges of the smaller heart. Top it off with diced strawberries and sprinkle granulated sugar around the edges.
  7. Bake for 14 to 16 minutes or until beautifully golden. Allow the danishes to cool and then dust with powdered sugar on top.
