Refried Beans

A classic Mexican dish made from cooked and mashed beans, seasoned and refried for a creamy texture and rich flavor.

Ingredients
  

Beans
  • 2 cups cooked pinto beans or black beans
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or lard
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth or water
  • 1/4 cup cheddar cheese optional, for topping

Method
 

Cooking the Beans
  1. In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cumin, and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the cooked beans and vegetable broth. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Mashing the Beans
  1. Use a masher to mash the beans to your desired consistency, adding more broth if necessary.
  2. Season with salt to taste and cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
Serving
  1. Serve hot, topped with cheddar cheese if desired.

Notes

Refried beans can be made ahead of time and reheated. They also freeze well for future use.
