Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Whole wheat flour can be used for a healthier option.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Feel free to reduce if you're watching sodium intake.
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil Olive oil is a great substitute for added flavor.
  • 3/4 cup warm water Adjust slightly for desired texture.
For Cooking
  • Additional flour For dusting to prevent sticking when rolling out the dough.

Method

Making the Dough
  1. Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl, ensuring an even distribution.
  2. Add the lard or oil to the flour mixture and work it in until it resembles coarse crumbs, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Pour in warm water gradually while mixing until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Rest the dough by covering it with a kitchen towel for 30 minutes.
  6. Divide the rested dough into equal portions, usually 10-12 balls.
  7. Roll each ball out on a floured surface into thin circles, about 8 inches in diameter.
  8. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook each tortilla for about 30 seconds on each side until lightly golden.
  9. Keep warm by stacking cooked tortillas in a clean kitchen towel.
