Baklava

Baklava is a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of filo filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with honey or syrup.

Ingredients
  

Filling
  • 2 cups chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pastry
  • 1 package filo dough thawed
  • 1 cup butter melted
Syrup
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method
 

Prepare the Filling
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine chopped walnuts, sugar, and cinnamon.
Assemble the Baklava
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Brush the bottom of a baking dish with melted butter.
  3. Layer 8 sheets of filo dough, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
  4. Spread half of the walnut filling over the dough.
  5. Layer 4 more sheets of filo, brushing with butter, then add the remaining walnut filling.
  6. Top with remaining filo sheets, brushing each with butter, and cut into diamond shapes.
  7. Bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
Make the Syrup
  1. In a saucepan, combine water, honey, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes.
  2. Pour the syrup over the baklava as soon as it comes out of the oven.

Notes

Let the baklava cool completely before serving to allow the syrup to soak in.
