Authentic Mexican Picadillo

Ingredients
  

Meat
  • 1 pound ground beef or ground pork
Vegetables
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 1 medium bell pepper diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 medium potato peeled and diced
  • 1 medium carrot peeled and diced
  • 1 cup peas fresh or frozen
Spices and Condiments
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil for cooking
Garnish
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro chopped
  • 1 lime cut into wedges

Method
 

Cooking the Picadillo
  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and bell pepper, sauté until soft.
  2. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned.
  4. Stir in the diced potato, carrot, peas, cumin, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  5. Pour in the tomato sauce and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Adjust seasoning if necessary. Remove from heat and let sit for a few minutes.
Serving
  1. Serve hot, garnished with chopped cilantro and lime wedges. Enjoy with rice or tortillas.
